Healthy Kids Receives Funding To Insure 25,000 Additional Children In Florida

TALLAHASSEE - The Florida Healthy Kids Corporation received $2.9 million in reallocated tobacco funds to insure 25,000 additional children in the State of Florida that are currently on a waiting list. Some children will receive health care coverage as early as February 1.

Today, there are approximately 800,000 children in the State of Florida without adequate health care. Healthy Kids is working tirelessly to provide children with affordable, quality health insurance. The popularity of the Healthy Kids program, due to the high number of uninsured children, has caused the program to match and exceed predetermined enrollment caps throughout the state. Therefore, Healthy Kids is very excited to announce that they are now able to significantly reduce the waiting list and offer coverage to those children.

"Families on the waiting list can expect a letter next week letting them know when coverage will begin for their children," stated Rose Naff, Executive Director of Healthy Kids. "We think it is a great way to start the new year and are happy we can provide these families with the peace of mind of knowing their children are now able to receive routine, quality health care."

The Florida Healthy Kids Corporation, a nonprofit organization, was established by the Florida Legislature in 1990 to address the problem of uninsured children. The corporation has received state and national recognition for its innovative approach to bridging the health care gap for previously uninsured children. Healthy Kids, which insures more than 106,000 children statewide, has been lauded as a national model receiving the prestigious Innovations i n American Government Award in 1996 from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
